Today after work (and about 80 bloody visas) I went to the reception of the Irish Embassy organized for st. Patrick's day, which is their national holiday.
The reception was as usual, including a speech by their minister of education who is just in Warsaw, with food (they had really very good hot sausages, but the rest was quite average in my view :), live piano music etc.
But the main reason why I'm writing this post and why I'm writing it in English, is that I just knew that another of my friends was leaving Poland. Jane, the Irish consul goes home on the 28th of March. And that's really bad to lose Jane - she's one of the nicest girls in our consular corps. She's that kind of typical Irish who can't be confused with any other nationality: a small and definitively veeeeery redheaded :), blue-eyed, always-smiling girl. She was always jolly and helpful, both at professional meetings and at parties. Of course we were not really close friends, this was rather that kind of diplomatic friendship - meeting a lot, chatting a lot, laughing a lot, sometimes even working together :). (Once I even had an interesting discussion with her about the Irish national identity in my car, when I gave her a drive after a Dips Club meeting.) So in a way she was part of my life, as all the others - we're all part of each other's life. As we diplomats mostly leave our really close friends and families far away, these diplomatic friendships gain importance.
And she's leaving now, and I won't even be able to be at her farewell party (sure she'll have one), because I go home tomorrow and when I come back, she'll be already gone.
(Sigh.)
