For a time I'm slowly experiencing this gloomy aspect of a diplomat's life. Namely, that we're constantly and definitely loosing our friends. In a way we know that it's the normal way of life - people come and go, we're here for a few years only and we go home or somewhere else. Though, it's a bit sad - as soon as we make friends with someone, we meet frequently for a time, and - alas! - he or she is gone, and we'll quite probably never meet again in our lives. Of course we can write e-mails, or make some phone calls (like Oswaldo - of course he forgot about the time zones, and called his friends in Warsaw in the middle of the night :) ) - but we all know, that's not the same any more.
On Tuesday I was on the goodbye party of Luis - he's gonna go back to Ecuador in January as well. Yura went back to Moscow a month ago. Zelda is now back in Jakarta for two weeks, Eric left to Budapest (he's one of the few whom I'll for sure meet), Oswaldo is back in Lima, Emanuele is for almost an year now at his new post in Brazil...
Of course, new people are arriving, new friendships are made. And the day is approaching, when I'll be the one to leave, and to leave my friends here...
Some people change their clothes, cars, flats every month or year.
We diplomats change our friends.
I'm not really happy about it... :s
